There are many key differences between being a guardian and having a power of attorney. First, being a guardian requires a legal court filing and court order. As a guardian, you will be legally responsible for the person's rights. You will not be responsible any pre-existing debts, but any debts incurred from that point on will be on you since you are the legal guardian.
As for power of attorney, it gives you the right to make legal decisions fo the person. You are generally not going to be liable unless you in performing your duties with the power of attorney, you incur some type of liability. Generally, power of attorney is used to sell, buy, or transfer the assets of that person.
