I think you've been misinformed. First, usually in a case like yours where one is charged with possession and not intent to sell, the court allows diversion program. That is, you complete a rehab and testing and after some time, the court dismisses the entire case. At that point, the conviction is modified to show no conviction. This is probably what happened to you. However, I may be wrong. You may have plead guilty and did probation and other sentence and think the case got erased. You have to check with your counsel or look at your court record.
In either event, even if there is no conviction, for purposes of immigration an expungement doesn't necessarily help you because you must disclose the entire case and how you were charged, pled and got is dismissed. You cannot intentionally fail to disclose that fact even if you have it expunged.
