SAT의 경우, 대학수준으로 출제범위가 한정되기 때문에, 어휘력이 준비시에 가장 중요한 요소가 됩니다. 따라서, 가능한 많은 "명작"을 읽어주는 독서만이 어휘력과 사고력 그리고, 속독을 가능하게 해줍니다.(시험은 제한시간이 있기 때문)
판타지 소설류의 수준으로는, SAT에서 요구하는 독해력과는 큰 차이를 가져오게 됩니다.
미국 수능위원회.(collegeboard)에서는 101권의 명작..대부분의 저자가 노벨문학상 수상자..을 소개하여, 고등학생들에게 읽기를 권장하며, 또 그 안에서 해마다 출제하고 있는 경향이 두드러집니다. (예, 헤밍웨이 노인과바다..출제 등)
