My father was natrualized as a U.S. citizen on dec.of1996. I was sixteen years old and was under sole custody of my father.I got into some trouble and was incarcerated at the age of 18 and served a 15 year sentence.Prior to my incarceration I was scheduled for an interview by immigration. I was unable to attend due to the circumstance, but my brother went to the interview and was given a certificate of natrualization. Two years before the termination of my sentence I was visited by ICE agents in the facility where I served my time. They interviewed me and I told them that my father was naturalized in 96'. Iam not an illegal.I gave them the number of all my my documantation and had my father cntact them. They said that as long as I had a valid green card and under 18 years of age at the time of my fathers natrualization I have obtain citizenship through my father. That is how I was released from prison without being detained by the INS.My concern is, what must I do now to obtain proper documantaion showing my status as a citizen of the u.s.? my parole condition is for me to obtain a social security card. I went to the ss office and told them my ss# but they asked for either a birth certificate, passport,or a natrualization certificate. I have none of these because Ive been incarcerated for 12 years. I have scheduled an apponitment with an immigration officer this friday and I dont know what to say.Is the information given by the ICE agent correct? and what must I do?I really do not know my status, am I a citizen ?

If the approved date of your residency was before you reached 18 and if your father became a citizen before your 18th birth day, you are a citizen. You need an evidence that your LPR was approved ever and the date of approval.

I am not sure whether the US government has your documentations in custody because it was long time ago. The prison administration may have some circumstantial evidences regarding their visitation to you or contact information of the ICE agents. At least the agents will have some records such as copies of the supportive documents they found in their further investigation according to your allegation. You may ask the immigration officer or ICE agent you will meet for any information about your permanent residency, such as alien number, the name of the city where you lived when your application for Green Card was submitted, the date of approval of your residency.
