Q.Can I go to Korea?

Hello,

Thank you all in advance for reading and replying to my inquiry.

I was 14 years old when I moved to the US with my parents (I'm 34 years old now).
Since then, I have not visited Korea (in 20 years). I initially came here on a student visa and didn't get my green card until 2002. In 2008, I became a US citizen. During this time, I've never requested my military service extension in Korea. Technically, I was to fulfill a military service in Korea because I am still a Korean national (dual citizenship since 2007).

Can I still go to Korea without serving military duty? I would like to stay in Korea for about 2 weeks and return to the US.

Thank you.

I don't think you still retain Korean nationality. The Korean nationality must have been revoked by operation of law when you obtained the U.S. citizenship. Be
that as it may, please consult and report to the Korean embassy/consulate
about your acquisition of the U.S. citizenship and follow their instruction.
Below please find an official reply posted on the MMA website, which
corresponds to your inquiry. Mr. YH Joh in Korea appears to be able to
explain in English for your better understanding. If you need any assistance in filing Korean documents, just let our offices know. Hope it helps!

=========================================================

"According to Nationality Law, a national of the Republic of Korea
who voluntarily acquires foreign nationality forfeits his/her
nationality of the Republic of Korea upon acquisition of the foreign nationality.
Furthermore, according to Military Service Law, military duties to the Republic of Korea are only imposed on the nationals of
the Republic of Korea. If you acquire foreign nationality (citizenship) after birth and thereby forfeit the nationality of the Republic of
Korea, your military duties are forfeited accordingly (re-imposed
upon reacquisition of Korean nationality), and in this case, your departure or entry will not be restricted for reasons regarding
military service. If you have any further questions, please contact

I can't understand 'I was to fulfill'
Did you service in Korea?
If you still keep Korean nationality and stay over 6month you must get in army
But I'm not sure because you were in states before 17 years old so you didn't make Korean ID card
If you go to Korea use US passport and don stay over 6month
It was till 35years old but I think changed 40 years old
